Backrooms Crevice

Ever wanted a tool that makes the world have a seam in it? Now it does.

Craft the Crevice Ripper and punch it into any wall, floor, or ceiling to tear open a crevice - a small rift in the world. Get close, line your eye up with it, and hold still for a moment... and you're pulled straight into the Backrooms.

Features

  • A tool, not a teleporter pad. Crevices can be ripped open anywhere, on demand, on any surface.
  • Look-to-travel. No punching a portal to activate it - you have to actually line up your eye with the crevice and hold the gaze.
  • Level select on entry. Every trip through an entry crevice lets you choose where you end up.
  • Level 0 - the quiet, humming, yellow-wallpapered lobby everyone starts in.
  • Level ! - run for your life. Same maze shape, worse lighting, and something fast and blind that hunts you down. Get caught and you're dumped straight back where you came from.
  • Procedurally generated mazes, unique per level, tucked far away in their own slice of the map so they never collide with your world.
  • Crevices of light let you find your way back - either a guaranteed one waiting at the end of each maze, or rip your own exit anywhere with the same tool.
  • Leave a crevice open too long and it starts eating your world. Overworld crevices left unattended slowly corrupt the terrain around them, growing outward the longer they're left open. Dig the crevice out to stop the spread before it gets out of hand.

How to play

  1. Get the Crevice Ripper (crafted with mese, obsidian shards, and steel, or spawn it in with /giveme).
  2. Punch a wall/floor/ceiling to rip a crevice.
  3. Stand close, look straight at it, and hold your gaze for about a second.
  4. Pick a level.
  5. Find (or make) your way back out - and don't forget to close any crevices you leave behind in the real world.

Notes

  • Built for Minetest Game (default) but will load and run on other games too - the crafting recipe just needs default items to resolve.
  • Corruption timing and mob difficulty are tunable in minetest.conf (see the README in the package for settings).
  • MIT licensed.
